A New Year, Shared Intentions

January often invites us to reset — to read more, give back, learn something new or feel more connected. If any of those intentions sound familiar, you’ll find you’re not alone. Many of those goals can be explored right here at the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge, together.

Read More (and Reflect Together)

If reading more is on your list this year, consider joining one of our book clubs:

  • Open Circle Book Club meets at 7 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month.
  • Women’s Book Club meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month.

Reading lists for both groups can be found in their dated entries on our website calendar.

Learn a New Skill

Trying something new doesn’t have to be expensive or intimidating. On Saturday, Jan. 10, join us for the Stone Soup Party (Noon-5 p.m.), a low-cost, hands-on day of camaraderie, skill-sharing and soup with homemade bread. Bring ready-to-cook chopped veggies, something to mend or fix, and a willingness to share. Current demos include mending clothes, furniture repair consults, hand-built ceramic bowls, kids’ sewing projects, making a tote bag from an old T-shirt, soup-making, beer bread and starting plants from seed — with more hoped for! Cooking begins at noon, demos run 1-4 p.m., and dinner is at 4 p.m.

Give Back

For those feeling called to serve, join others with The Walls Project for Martin Luther King Jr. Day volunteer events on Saturday, Jan. 17, and Monday, Jan. 19. Family-friendly projects include painting, gardening and cleanup. Walk-ins are welcome, though registration is preferred at www.thewallsproject.org/mlkfest

You can also plug in closer to home by joining one of our Social Justice Teams, which meet during Middle Hour (10:15-11:15 a.m.) every Sunday:

  • First Sunday: Climate Action
  • Second Sunday: Voting Rights
  • Third Sunday: Social Justice Team
  • Fourth Sunday: Reproductive Justice

Connect and Belong

If your intention is to meet new people or find community around shared experiences, our affinity groups are a great place to start. Groups include the Black Joy Collective, Retirement Support Group and more. Details about current offerings are available at https://unitarianbr.org/connection/affinity-groups/

Start Where You Are

You don’t need a big resolution to begin the year well — just curiosity and a willingness to show up. Whether to read, learn, serve or connect, you can do it at the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge. We’re glad you’re here.
