November Adult Class: A Sacred Reading of Calvin and Hobbes

Come join fellow readers as we treat the beloved comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes, as a catalyst for spiritual growth. For the five Sundays of November, we will get together to ask the question: what can we uncover if we treat Calvin and Hobbes as sacred? In each session we will discuss a reading through a theme and practice sacred reading techniques.

What is required: Before each session, participants are asked to read the selection for the upcoming class (around 10-20 strips) through a theme and select a word, sentence, or phase that “sparkled up” at you. This “homework” should take around 20 mins if you are contemplating the theme while you read. During the class, please bring an open mind and a shared joy of comics. Note: There will not be any reading assignment for the first class.

What do we mean by sacred?

In this class, we make two assumptions about a text we deem sacred:

  1. It is a force for good in the world.
  2. It holds deep truths for us to uncover.

When we treat a work as sacred, we trust that the text holds wisdom that is accessible to anyone who is willing to attend to it and let its secrets unfold.

When we treat a work as sacred, we do not claim that every word is literally describing our world as it is. We do not believe that the author of the work holds “special knowledge.” Rather, we encounter the work itself with the understanding that it has something important to teach us.
