October is shaping up to be a busy month at the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge! In addition to our regular weekly and monthly programming, we have a full calendar of special events — with music, dancing, worship, queer joy, Halloween fun and plenty of opportunities to gather in community.
Here’s what’s coming up:
Sunday, Oct. 4 – Annual Brass Service – 9 and 11:30 a.m.: One of our favorite musical traditions returns! The Michael Foster Project joins us for our Annual Brass Service, bringing plenty of energy and toe-tapping music to both Sunday services. Can’t make it in person? The 9 a.m. service will be livestreamed, complete with our live group chat, on our YouTube channel.
Saturday, Oct. 10 – Cajun Dance Lesson – 2-4 p.m.: Cajun dance is for EVERYONE! Whether you’re brushing up your moves before QUUeer Fête or just looking for something fun to try, come spend the afternoon learning with us. Come alone or bring a partner — singles and partners of any gender are welcome. Donations will be accepted at the door.
Friday, Oct. 16 – QF+ – Queer Encounters and the Practice of Flirtatious Hope – 7-8 p.m.: Our QUUeer Fête weekend begins Friday evening with Rev. Sean Neil-Barron. Queer and trans people have always found each other — through glances, colors, jokes and codes hidden in plain sight. Together, we’ll explore what these ways of finding one another reveal about the sacred and what it means to belong to each other all the way. Admission is free, but please register at www.eventbrite.com/e/queer-encounters-and-the-practice-of-flirtatious-hope-registration-2000525119485
Saturday, Oct. 17 – QF+ – Worship on FIRE – 10-11:30 a.m.: Rev. Sean Neil-Barron returns Saturday morning for a workshop exploring the FIRE model of worship from Foothills Unitarian Church in Colorado. We’ll share more about how we craft and experience worship in our own congregations. The workshop is open to UUs as well as religious and worship leaders from all faiths. Admission is free.
Saturday, Oct. 17 – QUUeer Fête – 5-9 p.m.: Then it’s time to celebrate! Our third annual QUUeer Fête celebrates queer voices through music, poetry, drag and more in a family-friendly evening of community and joy. New Orleans singer-songwriter Joy Clark headlines this year’s festival, and The Gais Do-Do Band returns to get everyone on their feet. Find more information and tickets at unitarianbr.org/QF.
Saturday, Oct. 24 – Halloween Party – 5-7 p.m.: Get your costume ready and grab a friend for an evening of Halloween fun! We’ll have pumpkin painting, crafts, games, trick-or-treating, s’mores around the firepit and more. We’ll also need some helping hands. If you can assist with preparations earlier in the day or staff an activity during the party, email education@unitarianbr.org
October has a little bit of everything at UCBR. Mark your calendar, invite a friend and join us for one — or several — of these special events!Top of Form
