September is shaping up to be a busy month at the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge! In addition to our regular weekly and monthly programs, we have several special opportunities to gather, learn, serve and have a little fun together. Whether you want to support voter participation, explore the nighttime world in our own backyard, learn some Cajun dance moves or sing around the campfire, there’s something special happening this month.
Every Sunday in September: Postcard-Writing Campaign
Our Social Justice Team’s VOTE subteam continues its Postcard-Writing Campaign every Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Volunteers will write postcards encouraging voter participation as part of a nonpartisan outreach effort to voters of color in Southern states. No experience is necessary, and all are welcome to join this hands-on opportunity to support civic engagement.
Saturday, Sept. 12: Moth and Arthropod Adventure
What comes out after the sun goes down? Come find out at our Moth and Arthropod Adventure from 7-10 p.m. We’ll set up a moth sheet with Master Naturalist Amber King and see what nocturnal biodiversity we can discover. Bring a flashlight or headlamp and bug protection, and drop by for a few minutes or stay for the whole evening. The event is free, and we’ll have cookies and hot chocolate to enjoy while we explore.
Saturday, Sept. 26: Cajun Dance Lesson
Get ready to dance! Join us from 2-4 p.m. for a Cajun Dance Lesson leading up to QUUeer Fête. Cajun dance is for everyone, so whether you’re planning to show off your new moves at the Fête or simply want to try something new, you’re welcome. Come alone or with a partner of any gender. The lesson is offered as a donation-based fundraiser, with donations accepted at the door.
Sunday, Sept. 27: Campfire Sing-Along
We’ll close out the month around the fire with a Campfire Sing-Along from 6-8 p.m. Join our music director and director of family ministries for seasonal favorites, camp songs, rounds and plenty of easy, fun songs to sing together. And, of course, no campfire would be complete without s’mores! We’ll gather at the firepit, weather permitting. In case of bad weather, we’ll move the fun indoors to the sanctuary.
There’s plenty happening at UCBR this September. Pick an event — or several — and join us for a September to remember!
